CRCHI’s single shield TBMs ensure a fast and safe tunnelling in complex rock conditions with uneven stratum, fracture zones and low groundwater level.

Working Principles of single shield TBM

A single shield TBM is often used in the geological conditions where the rock strength is weak and the sidewalls cannot support the force produced by gripper shoes. During a drive, a rotating cutterhead equipped with disc cutters is pressed against the tunnel face to cut the rock, causing chips to fall from the tunnel face. The single shield TBM uses segmental lining as the method of rock support. The machine advances forward by thrust cylinders which push against the segment ring. For single shield TBMs, segment installation and excavation are carried out alternately.



Features of CRCHIs single shield TBM

- The cutterhead is made of composite chromium-carbide wear-resistant plate and the edge of cutterhead is equipped with carbide cutter bits, leading to high wear resistance and long service life.

- The main drive uses double row cylindrical roller thrust bearing, ensuing long service lifetime and high safety.

- A reliable and high-efficient PLC control system allows real time monitoring and data collection. 

- An innovative transport system for different materials ensures a safe and highly efficient transportation of segments, pea gravels, construction consumables,and other material in the tunnel.

- Water spray jets equipped on the cutterhead, a dust removal system and an air cooling system are used to reduce dust formation, leading to an improved working environment.

- When encountered with unstable soft rock or fracture zone, the machine uses its reliable advanced drilling system and grouting system for rock reinforcement. Advancing cannot be continued until the rock becomes stable.

- Its diameter ranges from 3m to 15m.

CRCHI single shield TBM for the construction of Chongqing metro tunnel in China


CRCHI supplied a single shield TBM with a diameter of 6,880mm for the construction of Chongqing metro tunnel which is China’s first single shield TBM used in urban metro construction. The section with a total length of 3.84km mainly consists of sandy mudstone, sandstone and argillaceous siltstone. The CRCHI single shield TBM is equipped with a high-power drive system. Its cutterhead has large opening ratio and can rotate CW and CCW for muck discharge. This TBM is highly adaptable in different formations due to its specialized designs.


The breakthrough of tunnel is completed in November, 2016. The TBM achieved maximum daily advance rate of 30m and maximum monthly advance rate of 546m.This TBM achieved maximum daily advance rate of 30m and maximum monthly advance rate of 546m.
