The CRH3 EMU features an 8-car formation. Each traction unit consists of 2 motor cars and 1 trailer car. The EMU has an approved aerodynamic shape. Each of its ends is provided with a driver’s cab. When the train is running normally, it is controlled by the driver’s cab at front end. Two EMUs can run with them coupled and can be automatically demarshaled. The CRH3 EMU consists of 1 first-class seating car, 6 second-class seating cars, and 1 second-class seating car with kitchen. Seats in a first-class car feature a “2 + 2” arrangement; seats in a second-class car feature a “2 + 3” arrangement. All cars are equipped with rotating seats except that the second-class seating car with kitchen is provided with fixed seats. The seating capacity of the whole train is 557 persons. Main technical features of the CRH3 EMU: The CRH3 EMU comes with adaptive optimization design according to passenger transport demand of China on the basis of the successful development of ICE/ VelaroE. It inherits the high and new technologies of the ICE/ VelaroE high-speed EMU and has been improved according to technical development trend. Passenger interface design embodies concordance and unity between human-centered philosophy and comfort: The whole train is provided with rotating seats to ensure that passengers can always face the direction of travel of the train. Seat backs are adjustable so that ride comfort of vehicle is improved. Facilities for disabled persons and infants, craft catering facilities, perfectly functional sanitations, electric boiler for each car, luggage racks with clear glass and large luggage storage areas, A/V systems and folding tea tables, and such passenger facilities as charging receptacles are provided on the train. Unique noise reduction design is used. When the EMU is running at a speed of 350km/h, the interior noise is not greater than 65dB for a first-class car and 68dB for a second-class car.

 Type and model configurations:

Each end car is provided with a driver’s cab, a first-class sightseeing area, a second-class passenger saloon, and an electric heating water dispenser; the transformer car is provided with 2 standard toilets, an electric heating water dispenser, and a second-class passenger saloon; the converter car in the middle of the train is provided with 2 standard toilets, an electric heating water dispenser, and a second-class passenger saloon; each first-class car is provided with a standard toilet and a toilet for disabled persons, an electric heating water dispenser, a first-class passenger saloon, and a wheelchair storage area for disabled persons close to door of each car end; the combination car (dining car + second-class car) is provided with a kitchen, a bar, a dining area, a multi-function crew cabin and a second-class passenger saloon. 
 The EMU has a uniform profile with roof air conditioners and electric equipment equipped with air deflectors, closed equipment compartments arranged on underbody, and a coupler fairing provided at each end. A streamline design is used to reduce aerodynamic drag and noise.
